Gaming headphones. Are they worth it?

I've been seeing a lot of threads asking if gaming headphones were worth it, and nobody could give a solid answer. Hopefully this post will clear up a few things.

If you're not an "MLG pro" gamer, there's no need for you to spend $150+ on headphones, period. It's just not worth it. There's plenty of good headphones that will improve the average gamers K/D without costing a lot of money.

Im sure you've all heard people call Turtle Beach or Trittons crap, but the truth is that they're both good gaming headphones for the average stay at home gamer. Sure the Astro A40's might be the best on the market, but they're not worth $250 if you're just a person who plays Call of Duty or Battflield at home. I picked up a $45 Turtle Beach x11, and they work great. Although they're technically stereo headphones, i still manage to hear exactly where people are. I lost track of how many times they've saved my life, and i can't even begin to explain how much they will improve your game. This large improvement is coming from a $45 pair of headphones. You would have to be crazy (or you just have money to blow) to buy $250 Astro's if, and only if, you don't go to MLG tournaments.

The bottom line is that you don't need to go overboard with the amount of money you spend. Both Turtle Beach and Tritton offer great affordable headphones that will improve your game.

  1. I can vouch for this post. Have bought several expensive gaming headsets - all of them didn't last really long. From that point on, I only buy cheap headsets for 5-10 €. They have a good quality as well and last as long as headsets for 150 bucks and more.

  2. Completely agreeing you there. I'm using a 30 Euro headset (Creative FATAL1TY) myself and I can highly recommended it.

  3. I'm not really a big fan of wearing headsets. For a microphone, I bought a crappy $20 logitech headset from Walmart that I just put around my neck. I have nice speakers and subwoofer. I want to hear them.

  4. I wouldn't know the first thing about which headphones to get, but guess it's not really a problem.

  6. I don't bother with expensive gaming headsets, I just have some cheap-branded 'gaming' headphones, these are fine for me.

  8. I only end up buying headsets for the pc but even then they are just nicer headphones. I like to watch movies and listen to music more than I like to do chatting over them.

  10. I've never had any special headphones besides the Microsoft brand that came with my xbox. I used to work at GameStop and we carried everything from the lower-end Turtle Beach/Tritton that you talked about to a $250.00 limited edition Black Ops pair. I agree..I don't think it's worth it to drop that much on a pair of headphones.

  16. I agree, but for professionally competitive gaming, they are necessary.

  17. I've got the X41's. They really do increase the overall experience of a game. You pick up small sounds that you are completely oblivious to when listening through a TV.

  18. There isn't any sort of clarity difference with an expensive set of headphones?

  19. Eh I'd rather invest the cash in decent surround sound...I always game at home so no worries about disturbing anyone

  20. Very interesting writeup, I agree with the article unless your a pro gamer spending >$100 on a pair of headphones seems pretty stupid unless you've got lots of cash to throw around.
